Lex lets so few people into his inner circle of friends, it's only logically that he would be equally as choosy about those people who he lets in.
Fraser just works so well with Lex's insecurities that I'm surprised that more people haven't tried this pairing. They compliment each other, their flaws drawing them closer together.
And Fraser is such a gentleman -- even though he's injured, he can't help but try to be the perfect host. Unfortunately, he's not as good at being direct about what he actually wants as Lex is.
The shunts were dealt with so poorly in canon that I felt the need to mention them here. They also helped lead Fraser to the need to investigate Lionel and find a connection to the assassination attempt.
